How to Choose the Right Area Rug Size for Your Living Room
How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Your Living Room
Choosing a beautiful rug is only part of creating a well-designed living room. Choosing the right size can make just as much of a difference.
A rug that is too small can make furniture feel disconnected, while the right-sized rug can visually bring the entire seating arrangement together.
At Shabahang Rug Gallery in Waukesha, we regularly help customers compare rug sizes and determine which proportions work best for their rooms. While every home is different, a few simple guidelines can make choosing the right area rug much easier.
Start With Your Furniture, Not Just the Room
One of the most common mistakes when shopping for an area rug is choosing a rug based only on the dimensions of the room. Instead, consider the size and arrangement of your furniture.
Your rug should visually connect your sofa, chairs, coffee table and other major pieces rather than appearing like a separate object in the middle of the room.
Before shopping, measure your seating area. You can even use painter's tape to outline different rug dimensions on the floor. This gives you a much better idea of how each size will actually feel in the room.
5' x 8' Rugs
A 5' x 8' rug can work well in smaller living rooms, apartments and compact seating areas. With this size, furniture will often sit around the rug rather than completely on it.
For a larger living room, however, a 5' x 8' rug may feel undersized.
6' x 9' Rugs
A 6' x 9' rug provides more coverage while still working well in relatively compact rooms.
Depending on the furniture arrangement, the front legs of a sofa and chairs may sit on the rug, helping visually connect the seating area.
7' x 10' Rugs
A 7' x 10' rug is another versatile option, particularly when standard rug dimensions don't quite match the proportions of the room.
Handmade rugs don't always conform to exact standard dimensions, so you may encounter beautiful pieces measuring approximately 7' x 10' or somewhere close to it. That variation is part of what makes handmade rugs unique.
8' x 10' Rugs
An 8' x 10' area rug is one of the most versatile choices for a medium-sized living room.
It often provides enough space for the front legs of sofas and chairs to rest comfortably on the rug while creating a defined seating area.
9' x 12' Rugs
For larger living rooms, a 9' x 12' rug can create a more substantial foundation.
Depending on the furniture arrangement, most or all of the seating furniture may fit on the rug. This creates a cohesive, finished appearance and can work particularly well in larger living rooms and open-concept spaces.
10' x 14' Rugs
A 10' x 14' rug can anchor a large living room, great room or expansive seating arrangement.
Rather than having furniture positioned primarily around the rug, a rug of this size can accommodate much of the furniture itself. Large handmade rugs can also become an important visual element that brings together furniture, artwork and architectural features.
Should Your Sofa Be on the Rug?
There isn't one rule that works for every living room. Your furniture may completely surround a smaller rug, the front legs of your sofas and chairs may rest on the rug, or most of your furniture may sit completely on a larger rug.
The best arrangement depends on the dimensions of your room, the size of your furniture and the look you want to achieve. The important thing is for the rug to feel intentional and proportional to the seating arrangement.
Remember: Handmade Rug Sizes Vary
Unlike many machine-made rugs produced in standardized dimensions, handmade rugs can vary slightly in size.
A rug described as approximately 9' x 12', for example, might measure somewhat larger or smaller. Rather than automatically rejecting a rug because it isn't an exact standard dimension, consider how its actual measurements work with your furniture and room.
Sometimes those slightly different proportions are exactly what a space needs.
Finding the Right Rug for Your Living Room
Size is important, but it isn't the only consideration. Color, pattern, construction, texture and the relationship between the rug and your existing furniture all contribute to the finished room.
